Alfred Leonard Jensen and Ethel
Jacobson Jensen
It was a
bright sunny afternoon at a very dull ballgame on the Western Ball diamond when
Alfred and Ethel came over to John's car. He very sheepishly said, John, we
would like to tell you first that we went to Malad Idaho and were married. They
said that Harold and Ila Kelson had gone with them and were witnesses to the
marriage. Alfred later admits that when they got home after buying a license,
hotel and meals, that he and Harold had to dimes. But then most marriages start
from zero.
Alf and
Ethel moved to the ranch to live with grandmother and the boys. Later they
moved to Weston and Alfred started to operate the Utah Oil Service Station in
Weston.
They lived
in a two room log house in the north east part of town. One night Alf went up
to town to get the election returns. When he came home Ethel had a long log
through the kitchen window and the end of the log in the cook stove. As the log
would burn Ethel would put more log in the stove. But the next time Alf went
out he left plenty of wood in the wood box.
When Alf and
Ethel went to town they went by our house and when we went to the farm we went
by their place. The two families became very close. One morning Alf came up to
John all excited, Ethel had taken the model T Ford to go out to Han's place.
After she left Alf went out to where the car stood and their lying on the
ground was the lock nut that held the front wheel on. We hurried out to catch
Ethel before the wheel came off. Alford and the rest of the family attended
school at the Lincoln school, located 2 miles north of grandmother's farm.
Alford was given the job of going early to school to start fires in the
potbellied stove that heated the schoolhouse. One morning Alfred in a hurry to
get the fire started poured coal oil, used for the lights, on the fire. The
stove exploded burning Alf's clothing and also giving him a short haircut.
While Alf
and Ethel lived in the house on the north east side of Weston one of their
children, a boy named Keith became ill and died. Later another boy was born to
Alf and Ethel. My father John told them that he guessed that he would have to
pick a name for him. They agreed but kept asking him what the name would be and
John would just smile and say when you get ready to name him I will tell you.
The day they went to the church house to have the baby blessed and named they
stopped by the house to see what the name was, and dad told them it was Perry.
They went to the church house and had the baby boy named Perry.
Later Alf
and Ethel build an apartment in the back of the garage and service station and
lived there. It was in this new apartment that Carol was born. After Carol was
born Ethel became ill with an ailment in her back. Carol became a traveling
baby and was taken from neighbor to neighbor to tend her. Emery and Minnie Guy
who lived next door took charge of taking care of Carol. Alf and Ethel later moved
to Twin Falls Idaho where Alf was engaged in building homes and businesses and
church buildings. Alf and his boys Reed and Perry have become one of the
leading contractors in Twin Falls and have built some of the finest buildings
in the area. Ethel's health was very poor the last few years of her life. Ethel
died 5 November 1964.
